Newell Region Hydrogen Hub - The Brooks Newell region is proposing to develop the Brooks Newell Hydrogen Hub. Phase One will assure trucking and agricultural users that they can replace some or all of the diesel fuel with hydrogen without any adverse operational or economic effects. Phase Two will focus on developing market supply. Each hub will include hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling capability. The first hub is planned to be built within the Brooks Newell region, close to Highway 1 and the CP Rail line. The project cost is anticipated to be $10 million. About 75% of the project is planned to be funded through municipal and private investment. Brooks Newell is working closely with various Alberta granting agencies to identify potential sources for the remaining funding. The County of Newell is running a pilot project, installing conversion kits in diesel-powered equipment and evaluating their performance using hydrogen.
